On 30 November 2019, we meet in the city centre of Eindhoven to call attention to the racism that plagues the Netherlands, and the violence perpetrated against those who take peaceful action to end this racism.
Location: 18 Septemberplein Stadhuisplein, Eindhoven
Date and time: Saturday 30 November, 13.30-16.30 hour
On November 8th a large-scale attack was made on a Kick Out Zwarte Piet gathering in The Hague. This is unacceptable. On November 13th one of us was assaulted on the streets of Eindhoven, just because as a black woman she made use of her right to demonstrate last year by protesting against Zwarte Piet. This is unacceptable. On November 16th, 1000 posters were hung in The Hague depicting Jerry Afriyie as a Zwarte Piet. The caption of the posters was: ‘The Hague loves Zwarte Piet, not nagging’. This is unacceptable. On November 17th, a 6-year old child riding the train was called Zwarte Piet. Many of us have seen and heard the affected child and her mother in videos. This is unacceptable. Ahmad Mendes Moreira, from Excelsior, was called “black c**t, n*ger c**t, cotton picking c**t and Zwarte Piet” by opposing fans during a football match against Den Bosch. When he said something about this, he was called a “pathetic man” by the coach of FC Den Bosch. This is unacceptable.
In this moment in particular, we are all the more invigorated and hopefull. Resistance is growing. More and more people have the courage to speak out against racism and violence from radicalized pro-Zwarte Piet groups. More and more people see the need for awareness and change. Now is the time to stand with us!
